ABOUT

About the Collaboration

California is facing a widening gap in its transportation workforce. As the state accelerates its transition toward cleaner, more advanced vehicle technologies, demand for skilled technicians continues to grow, far outpacing the supply of qualified professionals. This middle-skills gap presents a critical challenge for our economic mobility, environmental goals, and the long-term viability of the state’s transportation sector.

Technicians, especially those trained in emerging propulsion systems, diagnostics, and repair, are essential to California’s infrastructure. Yet, many automotive technology programs, particularly in under-resourced regions, struggle to keep pace. Funding shortfalls, outdated equipment, and a lack of coordinated support leave both new and experienced educators at a disadvantage. Without a strong pipeline of well-prepared instructors and technicians, the industry risks stalling just when it needs to accelerate.

The California Automotive Technical Education Alliance (CATEA) was formed in direct response to this challenge. What began as a shared concern among educators, administrators, and industry leaders has evolved into a dedicated statewide collaboration. CATEA exists to support and strengthen automotive education through technical training, instructional development, and sustained industry engagement. From equipping instructors with cutting-edge tools to connecting students with internships and career pathways, CATEA is committed to powering up California’s transportation workforce, together.

Through statewide conferences, targeted workshops, and the development of lasting educator-industry networks, CATEA is building the infrastructure needed to close the gap and elevate the profession. Our goal is simple: to ensure every instructor has the resources they need, every program is supported, and every student is prepared to thrive in a rapidly evolving industry.
